BREAKING NEWS: Henry Cejudo OUT of UFC 292 matchup against Marlon Vera!
Turns out that Henry Cejudo is not shipping up to Boston after all.
Today (June 29th 2023), Henry Cejudo shared a post to Instagram, announcing an “important fight update”. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t positive, with Cejudo announcing that he has suffered an injury to his right shoulder that will require 6-8 weeks of rehab:
“Some important news regarding my future…
I’m unfortunately not going to be able to compete on August 19 at UFC [292]. I got an MRI on my right shoulder that revealed a tear that requires 6-8 weeks of rehab.
I stretched it out as far as I could because I love that Chito matchup, but between my shoulder and my baby expected on October 25, it’s the best decision for me and my family to not fight in August.
Nothing changes with my future goals. I want my title back. When I’m back to 100 percent, you’ll see me in the Octagon again. But until then, I need to heal. I hope the UFC can find a replacement to fight Chito so he could stay on the card, I would’ve loved to fight him in Boston on the 15-year anniversary of my gold medal. But I’ll be back [three trophy emojis]” – (via Henry Cejudo’s official Instagram)
In typical Cejudo fashion, “Triple C” added three trophy emojis as a footnote reminder (as if anyone forgot) of his past accomplishments. Last month, Cejudo attempted to add to those achievements at UFC 288 in New Jersey, coming up short against reigning bantamweight champion Aljamain “Funkmaster” Sterling. Following that fight, Cejudo made strong references to a possible re-retirement, but then pivoted his focus to Sterling’s close friend and teammate Merab Dvalishvilli, believing a win over him to be the quickest route to another title fight.
With Henry Cejudo taking time to recover from this injury setback, it is extremely interesting to see what the future holds for “Triple C” in the bantamweight division. Whether we see a wrestling clinic between Cejudo and Dvalishvilli, or we get the “Chito” Vera fight, there are certainly a number of game opponents for Cejudo to stake his claim against.
[Scratches record] Yeah, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I ended up here…or not. My name’s Keelin McNamara, and I am an AVID combat sports fan. Always have been, and probably always will be. I started writing and podcasting about MMA in the Summer of 2020 (yeah, we don’t talk about that here either). I’ve been doing it ever since, and have loved every single minute of it! Thanks for checking out whatever it is you’re reading – I hope you enjoy it!
